The University Bridge in Malmö

The University Bridge has become the new landmark of the waterfront.

The University Bridge is an openable swing bridge for cars, pedestrians and cyclists. The 77 meter long bridge consists of a fixed section and a swing section. In connection with the construction, Nordisk Staal assisted with engineering and manufactured the two parts of the bridge in Denmark, after which the 1200-ton bridge was transported to Sweden.

An advanced steel construction

Among other things, the university bridge must be able to open when the Swedish royal ship uses the entrance to Malmö's inner harbor environment. But creating an opening bridge places great demands on the steel structure, as the long swing section of the bridge must be able to keep its balance without stiffeners in the middle. Therefore, a cable-stayed bridge was chosen to distribute the load from the bridge deck to the bridge pylons. This way, bracing can be omitted in the middle, where the passage will take place.

The two parts of the university bridge, the swing section and the fixed section, are manufactured in Nordisk Staal's production halls in Frederiksværk, where we have the facilities to make even very large steel structures. The bridge parts were assembled into a fixed part and a swing part at the harbor in Frederiksværk. The almost finished bridge parts were then loaded onto a barge by Scandinavia's largest crane and sailed to Malmö.

Blends in with its surroundings

The clients, Malmö Municipality and NCC Sweden, wanted a bridge that blends in with the surroundings of Malmö harbor.

With the University Bridge, they have a bridge that is both functional and aesthetic. The bridge's airy design and thin bridge deck preserve the open expression of the harbor, while the functionality is top notch.
